To Catch a Thief
Spring is here and the weather is warming up. Maybe you’re thinking about where you should get away for a vacation this summer. If the French Riviera is too expensive then just let Cary Grant, Grace Kelly, and Alfred Hitchcock transport you there in the exquisite 1955 romantic thriller To Catch a Thief. The coastal views are as resplendent as Kelly’s costumes, and you get to see Hitch working in a more relaxed mode than usual. You’re guaranteed to have a lovely time if Hitchcock + mid-century movie stars + the South of France is an equation that works for you.
Grant plays John “The Cat” Robie, a retired jewel thief, and Kelly plays rich heiress Frances Stevens, but the details of the story aren’t what the movie is selling. It’s way more interested in giving us Grant and Kelly in front of a gorgeous Mediterranean backdrop. Every scene between these two mega stars crackles with glamour, wit, and romance. And while the suspense isn’t at the same level as a Psycho or Rear Window, we do get a fun rooftop sequence near the end that only Hitchcock can pull off. Even if you can’t make it to the South of France this summer, To Catch a Thief isn’t a bad consolation.

Inside Man
This is a re-post from June 2020
This feels like a “I’ll do one for you if you’ll do one for me” scenario. Spike Lee was a bonafide superstar at this point in his career, but his persona of a film auteur may have been on the fritz at this point in his career. The beginning of his career was a lot of him doing everything: Writing, directing, acting, and even editing. During the rise of his stardom he began to team up with Michael Jordan to direct Air Jordan commercials and reprise his character of Mars Blackmon (from She’s Gotta Have It). He attended Knicks games courtside as a loud character and a wardrobe that made him always recognizable on TV. He directed music videos for iconic rap songs “Fight the Power”, “Hip Hop Hooray”, and “Headlights.” These types of choices cemented him as an iconic figure. Politely speaking, this made white critics… slow to give him the credit he deserved. Inside Man gave him the opportunity to bring his style and unique lens into the popular heist genre, while extending his opportunity to make more “Spike Lee” style films…

With all of the recent action movies released this year, we decided to build a top 10 action movies list for the 21st century. One by one, we go through a list of 30 action films since the year 2000, making the case if they are top 10 worthy or not. Much like the first Joker, its sequel, Joker: Folie a Deux, has a barn-burner of a teaser trailer. Love or hate these movies, whoever cuts the trailers knows what they’re doing. I’m sure people will be very normal about this movie when it comes out.
Director Ti West and star Mia Goth return to cap their “X” trilogy with the retro 80s horror of MaXXXine, out in theaters on July 5. This trailer also has the goods.
The 2024 Cannes Film Festival lineup was announced this week. In addition to films from Yorgos Lanthimos, Andrea Arnold, and Sean Baker, the fest will feature new work from old masters like Francis Ford Coppola, Paul Schrader, and David Cronenberg. Coppola’s self-funded Megalopolis has been the subject of much consternation about its distribution. That’s nothing new for him, though.
