2022 Recap and What Should Be Next For Glen Powell
2022 was great for DYLA. Our best year since we started in 2019. Here's to an exciting 2023!
Drew is taking the month of January off and I am going to use this time to change things up a bit from our usual format. For January we will be releasing our weekly newsletter still, but of random topics I want to talk about. Plus, a Spotify Live on Thursday, January 12 previewing what Drew and I are most looking forward to in 2023! Keep an eye out for that promotion.
I want to do a couple things to start the new year. First, give some stats from our 2022 year. Second, highlight Glen Powell and provide some options for what I want his career to look like.
2022 year in review:
We stand now currently at 170 subscribers. 36 new subscribers in 2022. Our most since 2019!
Top 5 episodes of 2022:
1,779 clicks on this episode! We are pretty sure this is a glitch from Substack, but the stats we are seeing still say we got close to 2,000 clicks. Big deal alert.
2022 Oscars Preview (and Reader Contest!)
We will certainly be doing an Oscars Preview Spotify Live, newsletter, and another Prediction Contest. Keep an eye out for what is Drew and I’s Super Bowl.

Glen Powell is one of our most underutilized talents in Hollywood today. His momentum was partly stunted by the pandemic, but the phenomenon of Top Gun: Maverick showed us exactly what Powell brings to the table with his performance as Hangman. Powell has been on my radar since he played Finnegan in Everybody Wants Some. A Richard Linklater sneaky hit that has had legs on streaming and propelled Powell from a “no name” to a “that guy.” The 80’s aesthetic and the mustache he rocked hid his striking features while enhancing his on screen magnetism and scene stealing ability. Fully encapsulating Finnegan in the process. That disappearance into that character created the anonymity needed for a “that guy.” Once the mustache was peeled off he began to fully supplant himself as the potential next big thing. It started with his performance in the Netflix romcom Set It Up. A movie that showcased his leading potential with both his charisma and unique look. A top tier Netflix original movie that would have been the perfect transition movie into Top Gun: Maverick. Now that Maverick has come and gone I want to see Powell continue his ascent. Here are my visions as to what would be the best trajectory for his career.
Let’s use Cary Elwes filmography as inspiration.
There are so many roles in Cary Elwes career that are ripe for Glen Powell to model some performances after. This is not plea to remake any of these movies, but rather character archetypes I think he would do amazing in.
An iconic leading role. Hangman is a wonderful first step. A Westley in The Princess Bride type of role that shows his romantic capabilities, slapstick comedic timing, and magnetism that can carry a story forward.
A comedy lead in a parody such as Robin Hood: Men in Tights. Powell seems like someone who can commit to a bit. Does Mel Brooks have one more movie in him perhaps?
I love to love Powell on screen, but I fully believe he could play a character I completely hate. We have yet to seen this on the big screen. He has played likeable assholes that get redemption in the end, but not a villain that gets what he deserves. Give him a Cary Elwes in Twister type of role.
The loveable loser like in Liar Liar. Powell could easily channel a try hard step dad who as sweet as can be, but ultimately just missing the mark.
Let Powell star in a horror movie similar to Saw. The type of intensity a horror movie brings is enhanced with great performers like Powell. His skillset is ripe for the horror genre.
Give him a recurring character in serial like franchise. Similar to Daniel Craig as Benoit Blanc.
This one is harder to pull off I think because some of the novelty to the Knives Out movies is Craig’s performance as Benoit Blanc is so different from his turn as Bond. Powell doesn’t have that type of character to subvert expectation, but he has a recurring lead character in him that I would love to revisit every few years.
Richard Linklater’s muse
2023 may be a sign of this coming true. After being one of the leads in the ensemble for Everybody Wants Some and lending his voice to Apollo 10 ½: A Space Age Childhood we now have him filming the next Linklater film, Hitman, which seems to be coming out in 2023. A relationship that will probably never be on the level of Marty/Leo, but it is rare when a notable director/actor pairing becomes the reason to go see a movie. It already is for me and hopefully continues.
Update the Tom Hanks/Meg Ryan formula with Glen Powell/Zoey Deutch.
Another idea that might be coming true in the near future. This pairing has the best romantic chemistry on screen since Hanks and Ryan and we got a taste of it in the previously mentioned Set It Up. Powell and Deutch are set to star in a comedy called Most Dangerous Game directed by Katie Silberman. The writer of Set It Up, Booksmart, and Don’t Worry Darling. Most Dangerous Game is in pre-production still, but the trio of Powell/Deutch and teaming up with the writer of Set It Up makes me giddy for the possibility of Powell/Deutch becoming the next Hanks/Ryan.
